Seeds of Caatinga

Seeds of Caatinga

Synopsis: In the Serra da Capivara territory of Northeastern Brazil, siblings Maria Geane and Gean launched a transformative agroforestry project aimed at revitalizing the Caatinga, one of the country’s most neglected and misunderstood biomes. As their initiative grew and collaborations with fellow community members deepened, what began as a small restoration effort blossomed into a powerful agroforestry movement, giving rise to the GLFx Chapter Quilombo Lagoas. Seeds of Caatinga documents this restorative journey, tracing how the chapter has shaped an agroforestry movement in a region long marked by poverty and environmental degradation. The film foregrounds the strategies of traditional communities in cultivating refuge and freedom for all, creating conditions where both human and more-than-human life can truly flourish. GLFx Quilombo Lagoas, hosted by GM Consultoria and the Association of Agroecological Producers of the Semi-Arid Region of Piauí (APASPI), is a community-led force for biocultural resilience. Through agroforestry, agroecology, apiculture, and cooperative labor, the chapter advances the productive restoration of the Caatinga in Piauí state. The chapter stands as a living embodiment of Quilombola-led climate action in Brazil. Quilombos— historic sanctuaries built by enslaved Africans and their descendants who resisted and escaped the colonial slave system — remain powerful symbols of autonomy, collective memory, and resistance. Today, they are also frontline guardians of Brazil’s semi-arid ecosystems.
