Media Viability Manifesto - Testimonials from launch, Brussels January 2025

Around the world, democracy and human rights are under pressure, with autocracies on the rise and geopolitical conflicts intensifying. At a time when reliable, fact-based journalism is most needed, independent media are fighting for survival. They are facing a common and urgent problem: The need to reinvent business models in an era of diminishing revenue opportunities and eroding public trust. To tackle the economic crisis facing journalism worldwide, 13 leading media development organizations have joined forces in a pioneering multi-stakeholder initiative to develop the Media Viability Manifesto (MVM). It presents the first ever sector wide strategy to shape the economics needed to safeguard independent media as a key pillar of democracy. The MVM provides concrete steps for strategic collaboration in four key areas: (1) Business and technical support, (2) Coalitions and partnerships, (3) Evidence-based advocacy), (4) Research and insights.
