Overview of the Cuvelai River Basin
Spanning nearly 160,000 km² across Angola and Namibia, the transboundary Cuvelai River Basin is home to 1.2 million people. The ephemeral wetland system survives on a delicate balance, swinging between intense droughts and sudden, sweeping floods known locally as efundjas. In this video, we introduce the Cuvelai River Basin and the communities that call it home, where the "Enhanced Water Security and Community Resilience in the Adjacent Cuvelai and Kunene Transboundary River Basins" (CUVKUN) Project is being implemented. The CUVKUN project is funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and led by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) as the GEF Implementing Agency. The Global Water Partnership Southern Africa (GWPSA) is the Executing Agency, while the Cuvelai Commission (CUVECOM) and Kunene Permanent Joint Technical Committee (PJTC) are the focal custodians of the project implementation.
