Stiglitz on Global Inequality & the International Panel on Inequality (IPI) | UNRISD Geneva
Nobel Prize-winning economist and #ICRICT Co-Chair Joseph Stiglitz takes the stage at the United Nations in Geneva to present the case for the International Panel on Inequality (#IPI) — a landmark global initiative to tackle one of the defining crises of our time.
In this powerful address, Stiglitz lays out the staggering reality of wealth concentration in the 21st century:
The richest 1% captured 41% of all new wealth created since 2000
The bottom 50% of humanity received just 1%
$70 trillion in wealth is expected to be inherited over the next decade — cementing a new era of inherited plutocracy
In the US, the top 1% now holds a record 32% of total national wealth
Stiglitz argues that inequality isn't just an economic issue — it is fueling the global backsliding on democracy that we are witnessing today.
He also shares the remarkable momentum behind the IPI: support from over 700 economists and inequality experts worldwide, leading research institutions including the London School for Economics and the WorldInequalityLab, multiple United Nations agencies, and the governments of South Africa, Brazil, Spain, and Norway — alongside a landmark African Union resolution and the personal endorsement of the UN Secretary-General.
The IPI aims to do for inequality what the IPCC did for climate change: build the scientific consensus and political will needed to act.
