GREEN GRABS: How carbon markets grab Africa's land & squeeze farmers | IPES-Food’s Susan Chomba
MEET OUR EXPERTS | Susan Chomba - IPES-Food
Land expert Susan Chomba (of IPES-Food and World Resources Institute) breaks down the “land squeeze” crisis threatening Africa’s small and medium-scale farmers.
Across the continent, powerful investors, governments, and financial institutions are driving up land values, displacing rural communities, and turning farmland into an economic asset – putting food security, local livelihoods, and traditional landscapes at risk.
Susan explains the urgent need for action against “green grabs,” where land is taken for carbon offsets, green energy projects and conservation projects – that benefit outside interests rather than the communities who depend on it. She highlights how Africa’s farmers are being left without protections or policies to support them, and why sustainable landscape restoration can’t succeed without respecting local land rights.
She calls for Africa’s governments to strengthen land rights and peasant rights, and restore the continent’s valuable ecosystems and agricultural heritage.
Key topics:
• The land squeeze and its impacts on smallholder farmers
• The role of big investors, financial institutions, and speculative land deals
• Green grabs: How carbon offset and conservation markets harm local communities
• The importance of landscape restoration and community-led solutions
• Strategies to protect Africa’s farmers and land rights
