Charles Darwin Foundation Uncovers the Deep-Sea Wonders of the ETP | Bezos Earth Fund

We know more about the Moon than we do about the depths of our own ocean. In the Eastern Tropical Pacific – spanning the waters of Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, and Ecuador – over 95% of newly protected areas are deep ocean, still largely unmapped. Beneath the surface lie ancient reefs and hidden mountains that shape ocean currents, shelter endangered sharks and sea turtles, and help regulate our climate. With support from the Bezos Earth Fund, the Charles Darwin Foundation is leading the first deep-ocean alliance in the region. Using submersibles, eDNA, and cutting-edge mapping, they’re exploring these uncharted depths, discovering new species, and delivering the science needed to protect them from illegal fishing, climate change, and other threats.
