The Treaty on the Protection of Persons in the Event of Disasters (PPED)

Disasters are increasing in frequency and intensity around the world — from storms and floods to wildfires and earthquakes. But while hazards may be unavoidable, the level of human suffering they cause is not. This video explains the proposed international Treaty on the Protection of Persons in the Event of Disasters (PPED) and why stronger disaster laws and global cooperation are essential to protect communities before, during, and after emergencies. The PPED treaty aims to improve disaster preparedness, strengthen international humanitarian assistance, and ensure faster, more coordinated support for people affected by disasters — especially the most vulnerable. Through real-world examples, the video highlights how clearer legal frameworks can help governments and humanitarian organizations respond more effectively when crises strike. The initiative is supported by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) as part of its global work on Disaster Law.
