🌱OPTAIN Case Study Video - Felső-Válicka, Hungary | Exploring Nature-Based Solutions 💧
In this video, Dr. Piroska Kassai, Research Fellow at the Institute for Soil Sciences, Centre for Agricultural Research, introduces one of the OPTAIN project's key study areas: Felső-Válicka, Hungary.
The Balaton region faces significant challenges due to climate change, including soil erosion, extreme weather conditions, frequent droughts, declining soil quality, and nutrient runoff. These issues impact not only agricultural productivity but also the economic and tourism potential of the region.
🔎The OPTAIN project focuses on implementing and analyzing natural water and nutrient retention measures using environmental and socio-economic models. In Felső-Válicka, the team is exploring solutions to mitigate these challenges, such as:
🌱 Riparian Buffers
🌾 No-Till Farming & Cover Crops
🌳 Hedges & Buffer Strips
Learn how these green solutions can enhance soil health, improve water retention, reduce environmental damage, and support sustainable agriculture in this climate-vulnerable area.
