Every second, four babies are born somewhere in the world. But where a woman gives birth can still mean the difference between life and death. We’re proud to support "If I Were a Midwife," a powerful documentary co-funded with France TV, that follows midwives in France, Senegal, Guatemala, and Nepal, shining a light on the vital role they play at one of life’s most critical moments. Based on an original idea by former French Minister of Education and Women’s Rights Najat Vallaud-Belkacem, and led by presenter Sidonie Bonnec, the film highlights their essential role supporting women. Around the world, progress in maternal and child survival is real, but fragile. In 2023, 260,000 women died from complications related to pregnancy or childbirth, more than 700 preventable deaths every day. And today, there is a global shortage of nearly 1 million #midwives. The solutions are within reach. Proven, cost-effective interventions, like measles vaccination, access to skilled birth attendants, basic obstetric supplies, and community-based health services, can save millions of lives.
