Helen's Story: A Humanitarian Documentary of Casa Materna
This 5-minute humanitarian documentary by filmmaker Steven Wade Adams follows Helen, a young indigenous mother from the western highlands of Guatemala whose newborn daughter was born with hydrocephalus, a life-threatening condition requiring two surgeries within the first months of life.
Supported by Casa Materna, a maternal home founded by Global Communities, Helen found refuge, care, and hope while her baby remained in the regional hospital in Huehuetenango. Over 25 years, Casa Materna has served more than 125,000 Mayan women and supported over 25,000 safe deliveries without a single maternal death.
Through Helen’s journey, this documentary sheds light on the challenges indigenous mothers face and the vital role organizations like Casa Materna play in ensuring safe, dignified maternal care in the Guatemalan highlands.
