UNDP Papua New Guinea’s New Documentary on the Rising Epidemic of Witch Hunts

UNDP Papua New Guinea’s new documentary on the rising epidemic of witch hunts, ‘Noken Kilim Meri’, was awarded Best International Documentary at the 2025 Rome Independent Film Festival.  Each year, hundreds of Papua New Guineans - most of them women - are falsely accused of sorcery and subjected to brutal violence, social exclusion, and at its worst, death. The documentary raises awareness of the drivers behind this deeply troubling phenomenon and highlights the work of courageous activists combatting the rise of sorcery accusation–related violence (SARV) in Papua New Guinea’s Highlands Region. The film, which follows the work of anti-SARV activists in Southern Highlands Province, was directed by Marco Venditti and funded with the generous support of the United Kingdom.
