IDB Cities Network Webinar: Smart Cities for More Productive Cities
The rapid urbanization of Latin America and the Caribbean has increased pressure on urban systems and on the capacity of local governments to manage infrastructure, deliver services, and sustain environments conducive to economic activity. One solution to ease this pressure is the use of data-driven decision-making that allows cities to plan, prevent problems, and improve services with greater accuracy. Yet 96% of management information systems in the region are used exclusively for descriptive analysis — resulting in slow mobility, disconnected services, and poorly informed decisions: avoidable frictions that make cities less efficient, less competitive, and less capable of generating value, employment, and innovation.
This webinar is the first in the series Growing Cities: Strategies to Drive Productivity, organized by the IDB Cities Network. Through expert analysis and the experiences of cities such as Madrid, Medellín, and Santiago de Chile, it explores how the strategic use of data, connectivity, and artificial intelligence can transform urban management and become a real lever for more productive, competitive, and innovative cities — with the understanding that digitizing is not the same as being a Smart City. The difference lies in having the institutional capacities, enabling infrastructure, and strategy that turn technology into concrete results for citizens.
