Why Agricultural Productivity Matters for the Future of Latin America and the Caribbean

Since 1961, the region’s agricultural output has increased sixfold, driven primarily by gains in productivity. However, over the past decade, agricultural productivity growth has slowed, also slowing growth in agricultural output, which has become increasingly driven by the use of inputs. Why does this matter? Because higher productivity makes it possible to produce more food with fewer resources. This means lower production costs, greater food security, a more competitive agricultural sector, and better living conditions for rural populations.
