Girls challenging stereotypes through volleyball in Ethiopia
Shimay Hassen Abdi is 20 years old and lives in Kobe refugee camp in Ethiopia. Through the JRS volleyball training programme, she not only learned how to play, she also built strong connections with other girls in her community.
Together, they are challenging deeply rooted beliefs that girls are not suited for sports. By playing as a team, they are proving that sport can be a powerful space for confidence, friendship and change.
This programme was supported by the German Federal Foreign Office through ifa (Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen) under its ZIVIK funding programme.
