Massaha: Territory of Life
This short documentary takes us into the heart of the efforts of the CLARIFI initiative to promote conservation in Africa beyond traditional protected areas, by actively involving local communities. With financial support from the Bezos Earth Fund, the organization has been able to carry out concrete actions in #gabon to demonstrate that alternatives exist to #conservation approaches that exclude communities.
The film highlights several key stages in this innovative process. First, the collection of concrete scientific data revealed the very high #carbon storage capacity of community-managed territories, without resorting to conventional protected areas. This approach was strengthened by mapping areas threatened by illegal activities, showing how mobilizing donors and local support helped put a stop to illegal logging in the region.
Another important facet of the documentary is the development of a monitoring and alert strategy that encouraged the government to adopt a new conservation model, recognizing community-protected areas. Through the example of the #Massaha community, which initiated a request to protect its ancestral forest, the film illustrates resilience in the face of obstacles and significant progress achieved with support from the Bezos Earth Fund and RRI.
By highlighting the essential role of women in these initiatives, the documentary underscores their contribution as pillars of family, agriculture, and conservation. The film shows how these actions have brought local communities closer to the goal of conserving 30% of nature by 2030, inspiring other regions to follow this example.
Through beautiful imagery and touching testimonies, the documentary showcases the work of documentation and scientific research undertaken by communities to preserve #biodiversity. It emphasizes the importance of this collaboration to strengthen the credibility of conservation initiatives and highlight tangible data.
