Emerging Trends and Drivers of IED Use
Small Arms Survey C-IED Online Strategic Briefing Series
This briefing, held on 17 February 2026, and chaired by the Permanent Representation of France to the Disarmament Convention, aimed to establish a shared understanding of how both new and persistent drivers shape IED threats, providing a foundation for subsequent regional, people-centred, and nexus-focused discussions in the series.
It focused on:
- key trends shaping the contemporary IED threat landscape;
- the growing use of improvised explosive aerial drones, and whether these developments represent a fundamentally new challenge or an evolution of existing patterns;
- the underlying drivers and enabling ecosystems that facilitate IED use; and
- the role of threat assessment methodologies in informing adaptive and anticipatory responses.
