Guardians of the Forests

Across Indonesia, generations of Adat Law Communities have protected their forests through deeply rooted traditions and ancestral knowledge. These Customary Forests sustain culture, safeguard biodiversity, and represent a vital part of Indonesia’s green future. Since 2016, more than 164 Customary Forest Decrees have been issued, recognizing over 345,000 hectares of ancestral forests managed by nearly 88,000 customary households. With support from Norway’s International Climate and Forest Initiative (NICFI), the Government of Indonesia and UNDP continue to accelerate the recognition of Customary Forests. Together with Adat Law Communities and civil society, this partnership strengthens forest stewardship, empowers communities, and advances a future where people and nature thrive together.
