With the charm of a Pixar character, this teeny, tiny creature is unarguably enchanting. The bobtail squid is known to hide itself in the sand during the day, but at night, their cunning camouflage comes into play. From dusk until dawn, these squid hunt their prey, aided by a nifty adaptation called counter-illumination. The light emitted from bioluminescent bacteria that shelter in the squid’s mantle (the main ‘body’ of the animal), can be matched to the light of the moon, breaking up their silhouette when viewed from below, and keeping them hidden from predators.
