Tiniest Cephalopod: The Pygmy Squid

These teeny, tiny tentacles belong to the smallest cephalopod in the ocean: the pygmy squid. Living in the warm, sun-dappled waters of the Indo-Pacific, they keep to the shallows among fronds of seaweed and seagrass. Coupled with their ability to change colour to blend in with their surroundings, they also possess a further adaptation for camouflage: they use a specialised gland on their mantle that anchors them firmly to the leaves that surround them. From this sheltered position, they conserve energy while lying in wait to ambush small crustaceans that float past.
