Unlocking Potential: How Loans and Grants Can Transform Micro-Enterprises in Egypt

How can governments and development organizations design financial support programs that genuinely expand economic opportunity? This video examined a 2023 research study in Qena, Upper Egypt, which tested the impact of providing loans, cash grants, and in-kind grants on over 3,000 micro-entrepreneurs to understand what drives business growth. Led by Bruno Crépon, Adam Osman, and Mohamed El Komi, in partnership with the Sawiris Foundation for Social Development and 3 microfinance institutions in Qena, the study supports the notion that personal characteristics matter more than the type of capital assistance provided.
