Safety by design: What the Online Safety Act still needs to get right
The Online Safety Act exists. But it still doesn't clearly define what safety by design actually means. And without that definition, dangerous features keep reaching children unchecked.
Hannah Perry, Director at Demos, sets out what a strengthened act should include: clear minimum standards for terms of service, a firm baseline that platforms build up from, and critically, duties that extend to AI chatbots, which are currently outside the scope of the Australia ban and still at risk of being overlooked in the UK.
Children are already making friends with AI. The law needs to catch up.
