There may be an economic case for reconsidering North Sea drilling. But Nesta's Madeleine Gabriel says the symbolism matters too. The current crisis is serious and will hit people's ability to pay for everyday things. But it is also, hopefully, short term. The transition away from fossil fuels is not. Opening new North Sea fields sends a signal, domestically and globally, that climate commitments can be rolled back under pressure.
