The furlough scheme did what even Corbyn never could | Jill Rutter | The Policy Fix
In this clip from the Policy Fix, Jill Rutter from the Institute for Government delivers one of the sharpest observations in the episode. Through the furlough scheme, the UK state effectively guaranteed the income of the entire workforce and, in doing so, de facto nationalised every coffee shop in the country through the back door. As Jill puts it, even Jeremy Corbyn in his wildest dreams did not see that coming.
It is a striking reminder of just how much the state is capable of when it has to be. The question is why that level of ambition and responsiveness only seems to appear when the alternative is catastrophe.
This is an excerpt from episode 2 of the Policy Fix, the podcast from Nesta, the Research and Innovation Foundation. Host Joe Owen is joined by Jill Rutter (Institute for Government) and Andrew Greenway (A Bit Digital) to examine why government so often struggles to deliver and what it would take to change that.
