The tax system needs more long-term vision | Helen Miller | The Policy Fix

In this clip from The Policy Fix, Helen Miller lays out one of her core frustrations with the UK tax system. There is a long list of problems created by the huge differences in how different forms of income are taxed and while there have been attempts to chip away at them, the current chancellor's decision to put up employer National Insurance has made some of those problems worse. What Helen finds most troubling is the absence of any consistent direction. There is no sense of a vision, no clear picture of where the system is systematically moving towards. Some things get a little better, others get worse and there is no thread connecting any of it. Without that vision, the system just keeps accumulating distortions rather than resolving them. The Policy Fix is the podcast from Nesta, the research and innovation foundation. Host Joe Owen is joined by Helen Miller and Tim Leunig to explore what is genuinely broken about the UK tax system and what real reform would look like.
