Lebanon’s water crisis: the Litani River

With four rivers within its national boundaries, Lebanon was once considered the most water-rich country in the Middle East. However, today the country’s water supply is under mounting pressure. An economic meltdown has left more than half of Lebanon’s population in poverty, and more than 70 per cent of the population faces critical water shortages. Ninety per cent of Lebanon’s sewage goes untreated into the sea or rivers. Close to all water in the Litani River has pesticides and other health-threatening chemical residues.
