Jordan’s water crisis: Aqaba & the Dead Sea

Jordan could be considered an archetype of a water-stressed nation. Climate change, population growth, demographic shocks and poor planning drain the country’s minimal natural water supplies. Since the 1960s, Jordan has planned to desalinate water from the Red Sea in the south, transport freshwater north to the capital city Amman and dispose of the leftover highly saline water in the rapidly shrinking Dead Sea.
