Lebanon’s water crisis: Northern Lebanon
With four rivers within its national boundaries, Lebanon was once considered the most water-rich country in the Middle East. However, today the country’s water supply is under mounting pressure.
An economic meltdown has left more than half of Lebanon’s population in poverty, and more than 70 per cent of the population faces critical water shortages.
Although the district of Akkar in northern Lebanon is water-rich, it is also the most water-starved district in the country. Home to half a million Lebanese and one-quarter of a million refugees, most residents live below the property line.
