Understanding Youth Experiences Amid Multiple Crises in Ethiopia: Disabilities

At the launch of the report 'Experiences of Young Lives During Crises in Ethiopia' which covers findings from Young Lives Ethiopia's sixth wave of qualitative research, Dr Yisak Tafere (Lead Qualitative Researcher) presented in-depth findings on the lived experiences of young people with disabilities across Ethiopia. The research documents how disabilities, ranging from mobility, hearing and vision impairments to long-term epilepsy, often arise from preventable causes, including lack of vaccination, workplace accidents and conflict-related injuries. For many young people, these impairments translate into barriers to education, limited employment opportunities, social exclusion and poor mental well-being. The findings highlight that poverty, inaccessible health services and weak social protection systems deepen inequality for young people with disabilities, while family support remains a crucial, though insufficient, coping mechanism. The evidence calls for inclusive health, education, and labour policies that address both the causes and long-term consequences of disability, particularly in conflict-affected and rural areas.
