Phase 3 trial for next-generation malaria treatment GanLum meets primary endpoint
MMV and Novartis have announced positive Phase 3 results for a novel malaria medicine, GanLum.
If approved, GanLum would be the first major non-artemisinin-based innovation since 1999, with the potential to block transmission and kill drug-resistant parasites
Its novel ingredient, ganaplacide, has a new mechanism of action, discovered after screening more than 2.3 million molecules. Novartis plans to seek regulatory approval for the medicine as soon as possible.
This milestone was made possible through the WANECAM 2 consortium, co-funded by European & Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP), with support from the European Union and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida). Additional funding was provided by the Deutsche Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt and the Department of Health and Social Care.
The project was also made possible thanks to the generous support of MMV’s donors, including the Gates Foundation the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation and USAID.
