Migration Attitudes in Times of Crisis

Migration Attitudes in Times of Crisis

What shapes public attitudes toward migration in times of crisis? In this episode, Jessica Gale and Elie Michel share insights from their research on how people think and feel about migration. Drawing on data from 11 democratic countries during the COVID-19 pandemic, they show that support for border closures was not primarily driven by fear of infection. Instead, it reflected political views and levels of trust in government. When people felt dissatisfied with their leaders, they were more likely to support stricter border controls with effects that can last beyond the crisis itself.
