Advancing a schistosomiasis vaccine for Africa: About the VASA project
Some diseases rarely make global headlines, yet they affect millions of lives every day. Schistosomiasis is one of them, as a neglected tropical disease (NTD) caused by parasitic worms that continues to harm communities across Africa. The WHO’s 2021-2030 roadmap for NTDs targets the elimination of schistosomiasis as a public health problem worldwide.
The Vaccines Against Schistosomiasis for Africa (VASA) project is working to meet that target. A global consortium of ten partners is advancing a promising new vaccine candidate from the laboratory toward real-world use.
