Femmedina: Women artisans' voices shaping public spaces in Mahdia

In the Medina of Mahdia, a vibrant historic centre on Tunisia’s central coast, women artisans are deeply connected to their cultural heritage, particularly to the craftsmanship of wedding costumes. Considered among the most valuable in Tunisia, these dresses are made of silk and woven with gold and silver threads, and are crafted by women in their own homes. This video captures the voices and perspectives of women artisans from Borj Erras, who actively co-created—together with Cities Alliance and the Municipality of Mahdia—the intervention to redesign the Environment Garden as an inclusive public space and a place that supports women’s economic empowerment. Located in a strategic area between the corniche and the medina, the Environment Garden represents an important crossroads for both tourists and local residents. As part of the Femmedina programme, the garden will include kiosks for women traders, accessible public toilets designed to meet the needs of people with disabilities, an open library, an open-air theatre to animate the space, a children’s playground, and an outdoor gym to promote a healthy lifestyle. Listen to the voices of the women artisans of the medina of Mahdia! The Femmedina programme is funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and Global Affairs Canada (GAC).
