How extreme heat impacts mental health

Extreme heat doesn’t just affect our physical health - it impacts our mental health too. Early findings from a King's College London research project, funded by Wellcome, indicate that use of community mental health services increases by 7% during heat waves, while hospital admissions related to psychosis increase by 66%. Professor Andrea Mechelli says the impacts aren't felt equally, with those in lower socio-economic housing more severely affected. So how do we design our cities to protect mental health in the face of rising levels of extreme heat? Solutions already exist, like green spaces in urban environments, which are shown to have mental health benefits. Watch the full Research in Action film to learn more: https://lnkd.in/ebfTZPqb
