Matthew Potts on Extreme Heat | Wellcome
What do more frequent heatwaves mean for the future of British sport?
What are the implications for our public health?
In this video, England cricketer Matthew Potts says, “I’d lost the feeling of my legs”, as he describes being carried off the pitch halfway through a match.
UK heatwaves can be dangerous because they usually occur quite
suddenly, meaning there’s no time to acclimatise. With extreme heat it’s not just the temperature, it’s also humidity and how much solar radiation there is in the environment.
With these events becoming more common, we must find ways to adapt, to protect everyone - from athletes and spectators, to grassroots sport in parks and schools, to people working in outdoor jobs.
The Climate Change Committee’s report on A Well-Adapted UK provides evidence on how to address a warming world.
