How cities can protect mental health in extreme heat | Wellcome
Extreme heat doesn’t just affect our physical health, it impacts our mental health too.
Early findings from a King’s College London research project funded by Wellcome, indicates that the use of community mental health services increases by 7% during heat waves, whilst hospital admissions related to psychosis increases by 66%.
This Research in Action video, presented by Professor Andrea Mechelli shows that the impacts are not felt equally, with those in lower economic housing and settings more severely affected.
So how do we design our cities to protect mental health in the face of rising levels of extreme heat?
Solutions like creating green spaces can have tangible benefits for our mental health, and policy action must be enacted at scale to benefit e
everyone.
