37,000 civilians were killed in 2025 across 20 conflicts
It is UN Protection of Civilians Week, and the 10th anniversary of Security Council resolution 2286 (2016) on the protection of healthcare in conflict, yet it is marked by rising attacks on medical personnel and facilities. In 2025, the UN recorded 1,356 conflict-related attacks on healthcare in 18 countries, resulting in 1,980 deaths and 1,175 injuries.
And last year, more than 37,000 civilians were killed across 20 armed conflicts. That’s one civilian death every 14 minutes.
Tragically, this is just a minimum estimate, recording only the deaths the UN could verify.
This must stop. International law must be upheld to protect civilians in conflict zones, and to allow unimpeded access to humanitarians delivering life-saving aid.
