Many people with disabilities rely on older or donated wheelchairs that often require repair and regular maintenance to remain functional and safe.
An initiative supported by the project EU for Circular Economy and Livable Cities has helped approximately 50 wheelchair users by providing free repair and maintenance services, improving their mobility and quality of life. These wheelchairs did not end up as waste. Instead, their lifespan was extended. At the same time, the services were delivered by wheelchair users themselves - creating empowerment through inclusion and peer-to-peer support.
“We aimed to create a model that can now be replicated, as we have evidenced that the need is greater than what could be addressed in a four-month project,” said Suela Lala, Executive Director of the Together Foundation.
EU for Circular Economy and Livable Cities is funded by the European Union and Germany and implemented by GIZ in cooperation with the Ministry of Environment.
