Turning Glass Waste into Value: How Recycling Protects Nature and Creates Opportunity

Nearly 40 tonnes of glass waste in Albania are being transformed into high-performance pool filter material instead of ending up in landfills or nature. At the RecycAl Circular Economy Park in Fushë-Krujë, a new machine processes up to 300 kg of glass per hour, converting bottles, jars, and window glass into an advanced alternative to silica sand. This recycled material offers superior filtration - capturing particles as small as 5 microns—while helping inhibit bacterial growth. Produced locally for the first time, it reduces imports and creates new value from waste. Supported by the EU4Circular Economy and Livable Cities project, the initiative also produces terrazzo for decorative use, giving glass a second life in construction and design. By turning waste into valuable products, the project cuts disposal costs, supports businesses, and advances Albania’s transition to a circular economy. The EU for Circular Economy and Livable Cities project is cofinanced by the European Union and Germany, implemented by GIZ in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment.
