What Can Be Expected of International Law? Contemporary Developments and the Future of the International Legal Order
This webinar brought together a distinguished panel of experts to examine the mounting pressures on the international legal system amid escalating global conflicts. Against the backdrop of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, hostilities in Gaza, and shifting geopolitical dynamics, the discussion explored whether international law could withstand today’s unprecedented challenges.
Particular attention was given to the evolving posture of the United States, including its recent use of force in Venezuela, statements regarding possible intervention in Greenland and Iran, its approach to states in South America and the Caribbean, its financial disengagement from parts of the multilateral institutional framework, and measures targeting the International Criminal Court. The panel reflected on what these developments signaled for the stability and future of the rules-based international order.
The session was chaired by Elizabeth Wilmshurst of Chatham House, and featured:
Speakers
Devika Hovell, London School of Economics
Monica Hakimi, Columbia Law School
Yuval Shany, Hebrew University of Jerusalem
Philippa Webb, Blavatnik School of Government
Together, they analyzed recent examples of alleged violations of international law and considered the broader implications of geopolitical instability for the durability, reform, and future trajectory of the international legal order.
