On 17 January 1946, the UN Security Council convened its inaugural session in London. As we approach the 80th anniversary of its establishment, the British Institute of International and Comparative Law is hosting a timely event to discuss the ongoing challenges facing the UN Security Council and explore the potential necessity for reforms to enable this institution to effectively fulfil its role as the guardian of international peace and security. It will offer panellists an opportunity to discuss the findings of the recently published book entitled Empowering the UN Security Council: Reforms to Address Modern Threats, which was co-edited by Floriane Lavaud and Mona Ali Khalil. The panel discussion will be preceded by the screening of The Veto, a 57 minute documentary by Tim Slade which critically examines the use of the veto power by the five permanent members of the UN Security Council.
