Israel’s recent recognition of Somaliland’s status as an independent state represents a major inflection point in the Somaliland struggle for independence. In the aftermath of this landmark decision, there have been calls for the United States, NATO Allies, Major Non-NATO Allies, and Arab partners (e.g., United Arab Emirates) to follow suit. Some argue that it would provide Western Governments with a reliable democratic ally in the Horn of Africa. Others argue that it would provide a better location than Djibouti for Western military bases. With the midterm elections fast approaching, there is a major push to get the Trump Administration to recognize Somaliland’s independence. Join the Foreign Policy Research Institute’s panel discussion on the prospect and implications of the United States following Israel’s example. Joining moderator Ambassador (ret) Charles Ray will be Bashir Goth, head of the Somaliland Delegation to the US, along with two Africa studies experts, Joshua Meservey of the Hudson Institute and Michael Walsh of the University of Alaska.
