Building a Culture of Savings: Results from the Graduation Approach in Mozambique
Between 2021 and 2023, we worked alongside 5,000 families in Mozambique as part of the Graduation component of the Rural Enterprise Financing Project (REFP).
Through a comprehensive approach, we supported communities in strengthening their livelihoods, increasing their income, fostering a culture of savings, and becoming more resilient to economic and climate-related challenges.
This video captures the results and lessons learned from this experience in the provinces of Sofala, Manica, Tete, and Zambézia, where we worked together with the Ministry of Agriculture and with the support of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).
Saving capacity improved significantly. The percentage of participants who reported that their family was saving increased from 38% to 98% (+60 percentage points). Young women (ages 18 to 34) achieved the highest savings levels, averaging 412.59 meticais (US$6.50). By the end of the program, 96% of participants were part of a savings group created through the initiative.
More than just numbers, this is about transformation — the kind that happens when we trust in people’s capabilities and provide opportunities for them to thrive.
