ICTP Distinguished Conversations: Duncan Haldane
Physics Nobel Laureate Duncan Haldane is interviewed by ICTP Director Atish Dabholkar and by Erio Tosatti, ICTP emeritus scientist.
Duncan Haldane of Princeton University received the 2016 Physics Nobel Prize for theoretical discoveries of topological phase transitions and topological phases of matter. The interview was conducted in May 2025, when Haldane was visiting ICTP as one of the speakers of the joint ICTP-Lincei Conference on Quantum Physics: from Foundations to Emerging Technologies. This three-day event was organised by ICTP and the Italian Accademia dei Lincei to celebrate the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology, proclaimed by the United Nations in 2025. The conference featured nine Nobel Laureates who have made major contributions to quantum mechanics.
