Making new or better proteins is not a new trend, but the advent of powerful biochemical AI algorithms and precise gene editing has made it a much more accessible process. Six UNU-BIOLAC fellows of 2025 are conducting research stays in Latin American laboratories as part of projects such as: designing a virus-inspired protein to deliver DNA into the nucleus, producing immunotherapeutics and vaccines for leptospira and bovine mastitis, developing a protective application against plant pathogens of cocoa, and understanding a weak point of trypanosomatid parasites.
