How pigs can benefit an agroforestry system
Alex Gray, Soil Association Ambassador, gives an overview of how they have incorporated pigs into their agroforestry system at Brooksby College. From how they created the woodland, to protecting trees, to raising young weaning piglets. There is really helpful information for anyone considering adding pigs to their system.

Alex says
"An update on our agroecologically raised pig project. We have been using pigs to help convert an overgrown arboretum into a food forest. We’ve kept the existing tree cover, including good numbers of walnut and crab apple trees, and introduced 70 productive cherry trees, hopefully providing a good show of blossom for our adjacent wedding venue in years to come.
The pigs have been managed to helped reclaim the land, eating the bramble and thistle roots, keeping them in check whilst not entirely eliminating their presence. We continue to see all the welfare benefits that were evident from last year and continue to rest the land sufficiently to prevent negative levels of pig disturbance. In the coming months as our first batches of piglets are weaned, I’ll start to target their efforts to our other woodlands, where they will be prepping felled areas for restocking in the winter."
