Top 5 reasons for planting hedges

Why should you plant hedges or trees on your farm, in your garden, on your small holding or in a community green space? Ambassador Liam McNulty from @Willowfordfarm in Cumbria tells us his top 5 reasons for his hill farm. ☀️1. Shade and Shelter - animals need to stay warm or shelter from the sun. Like animals we need trees and hedges to reduce the wind, or provide a lovely shady spot on a hot summers day. 🍃2. Food for animals - cows and sheep love to browse the hedges to get a diverse mix into their diet to help stay healthy. Like animals, if there is a rich hedgerow us people can forage for some exciting crops such as blackberries, rosehips, elderflowers, hawthorn berries, beechnuts, hazelnuts...to name a few. ♻️3. Great for the environment- trees and hedges improve soil, , take in carbon, help with water flows and clean the air 🪱4. Great for wildlife - provide pollen for insects, shelter for birds and small mammals. 🌳5. Beauty - trees and hedges are just downright beautiful, they are pleasure to look at throughout the seasons. It is not too late to plant trees ready for the 2026 growing season...but you had better plant fast! Many trees are starting to bud... #cumbria #hedges #farms #organic #agroforestry #planttrees #trees Our Ambassador programme is part of our Farm to Fork partnership with @OcadoUK
