Transforming an arable field into a haven for grassland wildlife with mob grazing and agroforestry

Alex Gray, Soil Association Ambassador and farmer at Brooksby College shares the progress they have made with their first agroforestry field established in 2021. It is amazing to see how quickly (5 years) nature reintroduces itself through planting more trees, adding diverse species and mindful grazing. He says "this formerly arable field has been transformed into a haven for grassland wildlife, whilst also creating the most resilient and productive pasture on the farm. The most notable difference has been the soundscape, with a notable difference in birds, especially skylarks and goldfinches as well as grey partridge that nest in the tree rows. I really think that this is the sort of farming that can rebuild habitats whilst continuing to feed our population. The aesthetics of this landscape are also a pleasure to be in and I feel offer serious tourism value to our rural economies."
