Why Gender and Social Inclusion Matter for Forests, Trees, and Sustainable Landscapes

Women play a central role in forest and tree-based systems, yet structural barriers such as social norms, unequal access to resources, and limited decision-making power continue to constrain their agency and recognition. Drawing on evidence and case studies from CIFOR-ICRAF’s global research and field programmes, this lecture explores how gender-responsive and socially inclusive approaches improve landscape governance, environmental outcomes, and livelihood resilience. It highlights practical pathways for integrating equity into forest and land-use policies that are relevant to global sustainability and science-policy agendas.
