Reducing Plastic Waste with Bamboo Innovation | Meet Francis Biney
What happens when you see a challenge in your community? You create a solution.
Meet Francis Biney, a young innovator transforming locally sourced bamboo into sustainable alternatives to plastic household products.
Concerned about the widespread use of plastic ladles and spoons for cooking and the potential health and environmental risks associated with heated plastics, Francis began exploring bamboo as a safer, natural alternative. With bamboo readily available in his community, he crafts it into spoons, cups, cutlery sets, lampshades, and other products that promote sustainability while reducing plastic waste.
Through the Young Africa Innovates (YAI) Programme, supported by the Mastercard Foundation and implemented by UNDP, Francis gained valuable skills in identifying customer needs, understanding community challenges, and developing solutions that create impact.
His innovation is helping to reduce plastic waste, promote sustainable living, and demonstrate the power of locally driven solutions.
Watch Francis’ story and discover how youth-led innovation is building greener and more resilient communities.
