Cocoa production faces numerous sustainability issues such as deforestation, child labor, and poverty, even though producing countries are making considerable efforts and launching numerous initiatives to transition to a sustainable production. In this context, the European Union and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) are funding initiatives for sustainable cocoa production in the cocoa-producing countries of Ghana, Cameroon, and Côte d'Ivoire. The aim is to support these countries in achieving sustainable cocoa production that guarantees better incomes for farmers, contributes to improving national public revenues, and puts an end to environmental degradation, particularly deforestation and labor rights abuses, including child labor and gender inequality.
